Aspects of our Spiritual Life
There are many events during the school year, here is a selection:
Day Of Welcome for Year 7
This day in September is an opportunity for each form to get to know each other and to explore what it means to join the St Mary’s community.
Residential Retreat for Year 9
The two days away at
Myddelton Grange contain challenging and thought provoking sessions with Fr. Simon, games, a visit to the Stations of the Cross at Calvary as well as the Easter Vigil service and closing Mass. There is time for personal reflection and spiritual growth, structured social time, shared communal tasks and lots of fun and laughter.
Services Of Reconciliation
These occur during Advent and Lent. Each Year Group attends a service and students are encouraged to
receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation afterwards, with our Deanery Priests.
Residential Retreat for Year 11
In Year 11, students are given the opportunity to take part in a two day residential retreat at
Myddeleton Grange. Pupils learn about self-exploration through religious meditation and develop their understanding of the extended Catholic community. Pupils get to know each other and understand the importance of life and belief.
Lourdes Pilgrimage
A group of 40 pilgrims, made up of Year 10 and Year 12 students, make an annual pilgrimage to
Lourdes. St. Mary's have been taking part in the Lourdes pilgrimage since 1993.
Sixth Form RetreatYear 12 students are encouraged to take part each June in a residential retreat on the
Holy Island of Lindisfarne.
Walsingham PilgrimageThe annual Diocesan Pilgrimage to Walsingham has been added to our
Liturgical Calendar. Walsingham has been a site of pilgrimage since 1061 when a Saxon noblewoman, Richeldis de Faverches, was taken to the Holy Land in a vision and subsequently built a replica of the Holy House (where the Virgin Mary received news of the Annunciation).
SVP Group
SVP stands for St Vincent de Paul, which is a Catholic charitable group. The aim of the charity is to help the disadvantaged as well as encouraging people to help those in their local community (for example the sick, lonely, elderly or disabled, or anyone who needs assistance). The charity group believes this is best done through direct and practical assistance.
At St. Mary's we have a Youth SVP group run by a Sixth Form team. Our main focus is the care home in Guiseley (Primrose Court) which students visit weekly to have a chat and socialise with residents.
Weekly Class Mass
Over the year, on a rotation basis, each form group will have the opportunity to celebrate Mass together with their form tutor.
Year Masses
Each year group come together, once a year to celebrate Mass centred on a pertinent theme.
Celebration of Major Feasts
Key Feasts are celebrated through Mass such as Saints Peter and Paul. Each July, the whole school community of St. Mary’s come together for our Feast Day Mass.
The Good Shepherd Appeal
The Good Shepherd Appeal is an opportunity for children to help children. It is visionary and pioneering work pursuing our Mission of “taking the caring Church into the community”. There is a Good Shepherd Service each year at Leeds Cathedral.
