Through our drama curriculum we aspire to give all students opportunity to build their knowledge of drama and teach them how to apply this to the world around them. Through engagement with a wide range of drama skills, scripts and live theatre productions, we believe that all students benefit from the space to explore and develop their creativity.
Subject Overview
Communication is essential to the world around us. Through the engagement with the wide and varied drama curriculum, we offer the opportunity for our students to become experts in communication. We teach students to recognise the way that drama skills create and communicate meaning and give them the opportunity to explore and develop these skills in relation to a wide and varied texts and theatrical styles. Knowledge is built through a spiral curriculum, giving students the opportunity to revisit skills and build complexity as they learn.
Course Content
Drama Years 7 - 9
Student learn about key acting skills and have the opportunity to apply these skills three key areas, making theatre, performing theatre and responding to theatre. Each year, students have the opportunity to explore:
- Theatrical style such as Theatre in education and physical theatre
- Contemporary scripts such as DNA
- Classical scripts such as Romeo and Juliet
- Live theatre such as musical theatre and National Theatre productions
Drama GCSE Years 10-11
Students can then build on the fundamental skills developed in Years 7-9 by exploring more complex scripts, building knowledge and understanding of how theatre is created and performed.
GCSE drama is split into three components
Understanding drama, where students build their knowledge and understanding of how drama is created and performed
Devising drama where students explore a range of theatrical styles to create an original performance
Texts in practice where students have the opportunity to direct and perform scripts from page to stage.
